Finding out where things are is the most popular reason for getting in touch with any online retailer. There are over a million parcels in the UK logistics network at any one time so it is inevitable some parcels are going to go wrong form time to time. Even it it is 0.01% that's still quite a few.
The government legislation which covers consumer rights does give retailers some breathing room to try to find/fix any delays (details here). If a retailer is investigating with their courier it is likely this investigation will need to conclude before a remedy can be prescribed.
